The work that demonstrates most clearly Bermejo’s mastery of Renaissance techniques is the Piet à of 1490 in the Barcelona Cathedral. The central panel of this triptych, which was commissioned by a Piedmontese cloth merchant for his family chapel (and later bequeathed to the cathedral at Acqui Terme), is one of only three works that Bermejo signed during his lifetime. He then renegotiated the contract in 1477 and completed the work himself.
Bartolomé de Cárdenas – nicknamed Bermejo (meaning ‘reddish’), perhaps for the auburn colour of his hair – was born in Cordoba in around 1440. Little is known of Bermejo’s early activity. The centre of the exhibition is Saint Michael Triumphant over the Devil with Donor Antoni Joan (1468). The beauty of the sunset and the astounding detail of the landscape in which the Madonna is seated set the work apart from that of other painters in the Kingdom of Aragon – such as the Osona brothers, who completed the two wings of the altarpiece. His earliest surviving work is an altarpiece painting of St. Michael commissioned for the parish church of Tous (1468). Surveying the damage at this landmark suggests how long and difficult the road to rebuild Beirut – once again – will be. Bermejo moved to Barcelona in the mid 1480s, where he collaborated with Jaime Huguet, the principal master of Catalan Gothic painting. Descent of Christ in Limbo (c. 1470–80), Bartolomé Bermejo.
