I'm a fan of old movies in general and old horror movies in particular.
While a gaggle of interlopers, including a disreputable lawyer (Cedric Hardwicke) and a fake vicar (Ralph Richardson), descend on the professor's manor to steal the jewel for themselves, Morlant returns from the dead to punish everyone who has betrayed him. The Ghoul 'The Ghoul' had completely disappeared, not even the trailer survived.
Look at the cast! I really appreciate what the director here is trying to do, this was an independent movie. (1933). It took me years to find, yet it was well worth the wait.The history of this Karloff gem is fascinating. Englishmen race to find the tomb of Genghis Khan before the sinister Fu Manchu does.

Although somewhat placed in the shade by Universals gleefully morbid 1932 version of The Mummy, there are numerous virtues displayed by this beautifully restored film that make it more than just a 'curio' to be ticked off of your list of obscure early horror films: Ernest Thesiger adopting a faux Scottish accent that would make Private Frazer proud, the wonderfully claustrophobic cinematography by Gunther Krampf, the subtly propulsive score by Louis Levy & Leighton Lucas, the eye-achingly glamorous Dorothy Hyson and the 'exotic' stereotyped scoundrel played by Harold Huth.

Had the film not vanished it would have become a hardy perennial of late night television horror alongside the Lemalle classics. Its available on a number of DVDs but the ONLY one worth buying is this MGM american release. Therefore, I was prepared to overlook the graininess, variable contrast and sound-track distortions.
And then the DVD was quietly released with little or no fanfare and it is absolutely gorgeous and one of Karloff's best British films. An alright horror movie, but over-hyped by critics. The quality of the print used is stunning, looks like it was printed only yesterday and if you have seen other dvds of this film you will know how often an old, scratchy print is used, this one though has to be seen to be believed...so glad I opted to upgrade my copy to use on a multi-region player. We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future. When a grave robber steals the gem Morlant rises from his tomb seeking revenge.
| Rating: C+ But if you are, this movie - and its current incarnation on Blu Ray - is a must-own. He says that Professor Morlant is a fanatical believer that gave most of his fortune for the jewel. Horrible over acting for its times. Oh well, there was always the Mummy.

'The Ghoul' belongs to Karloff. |. Beautiful visuals- never heard of the British film company that made it, but it makes me want to find the photographer/director & seek out more work by them.

The Ghoul ( 1933) The Ghoul. Aided by spooky atmospherics and looking as if an addition into The Mummy library of Universal Films, this becomes a opportunity for the leads to show off their acting chops as they each creep about, limp about, eating dimly lit scenery as they go, followed by the inevitable good-looking couple to spike some dreary romantic entanglement. It's okay, though, don't get me wrong, the movie's alright, just not great.
As to be anticipated, the scarab jewel is removed from the hand of his corpse by a tomb robber not long after internment providing the impetus to wreak revenge in the signature fashion.The quality of the film may distract some viewers, but the atmosphere retains most of it's inaugural impact. That being said Boris Karloff delivers what I believe to be the greatest performance in the first 15 minuets of this movie and peters out.
It is amazing that there hasn't been a low of fanfare about this film, which was considered "lost" for most of the 20th Century.
