The application process for MBE certification often involves submitting a detailed report on the firm along with supporting documents to the certification authority. Certification for Minority-owned Businesses Minority Business Enterprise Certification with the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), a private third-party that certifies minority-owned businesses on behalf of U.S. corporations or MBE certification through city, county or state programs. To take advantage of these programs, you need to be on their radar by getting officially certified as a Minority-Owned Business or Minority Business Enterprise (MBE). To be certified as a minority-owned business, your company must be at least 51% owned, operated, and controlled by a minimum of one U.S. citizen whose ethnic background is at least 25% Asian-Indian, Asian-Pacific, Black, Hispanic, or Native American.

As a certified minority-owned business, you have direct access to these contracts in online directories – often with no or little competition. On top of the NMSDC certification, a minority-owned business may also seek out certification from other entities, such as the Small Business Administration (SBA) or individual cities and states in which they are located.

1. A minority business may be certified as a minority “controlled” enterprise if the minority owners own at least 30% of the economic equity* of the firm. Specifically, the SBA offers a certification called 8(a). The authority may also visit the business site to verify information provided in the application. You do not have to submit an application to SBA for SDB status. Certification is usually granted within 45 days of receipt of a successful application, and is valid for three years. However, you and your firm must still understand the SBA eligibility criteria for SDBs.
