In the second year, most students will maintain 12 credits or more of coursework per semester. Applicants for the Columbia MPH must select a department. The integrated fall semester includes a seamless progression through the 16 modules of the Core and the case-based Integration of Science and Practice (ISP) course. During the first semester of the Columbia MPH and the Accelerated MPH, while engaging in the integrated core, students are strongly advised against extra-curricular work commitments. In year two, Columbia MPH students continue with departmental coursework and move into their certificate concentrations over a third and/or fourth semester.

Offered through each of the School's six academic departments (Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Policy and Management, Population and Family Health, and Sociomedical Sciences), students in all MPH programs are united by a group of required School-wide courses which achieve a common set of high-level core competencies. Students in the Columbia MPH engage in a summer practicum and continue on to a second year. Students in the Accelerated MPH program have a full-time, three-semester, flat fee model (Fall/Spring/Summer). Once a week, students break into interdisciplinary groups and meet with faculty for active, cross-cutting, case-based learning. At the end of th this period,  their MPH is complete. Students spend full days Monday through Friday on campus engaging in coursework, seminars, collaborative free periods, and other activities. While most candidates require two years to fulfill their requirements, a one-year Accelerated MPH program is available to select candidates. Students also prepare for their practicum through a wide range of activities from the departments and the Integrative Practicum Experience (IPE). The Columbia MPH program trains students to analyze and resolve public health challenges and phenomenon on the local, national, and international levels. By early August, students receive an email asking them to rank their interest in mostly morning classes versus mostly afternoon classes. In second, third, and fourth semesters of the program, schedules are more flexible and students may engage in some part-time work. Public health is an exciting field of work dedicated to protecting and improving the health and well-being of communities, particularly those seen as the most vulnerable.

As students move through their first year, they shift into their departmental courses and continue case-based learning through the ISP.
