Getting to the Fraser Island Great Walk is generally done from departing from nearby Hervey Bay on the mainland, taking a barge over and then heading to the Kingfisher Hill vehicle track. We could maintain good pace on this section helping us to later get to a Eurong before dark. This two day trek is challenging and not for the faint hearted but achievable with good fitness level. Kingfisher Bay to Eurong and back in 2 days, We wanted to see if you could get across Fraser and back on foot in 2 days while still enjoying some of Fraser’s highlights. Basin lake is around half way (I think) and it's a great spot to stop off an have a swim in the middle of nowhere. On Fraser Island, there are places you can reach in a tour bus, there are places you can reach in your own 4WD, and there are places you can only reach on foot. There's a cool little water hole and the beach is right at the front. We just did 4 nights because I was with my 3 kids and didn't want to overdo their first big hike. We arrived at Eurong resort at 6pm. We chose to stay overnight at Eurong Resort rather than camp which allowed us to be rejuvenated for the next day. .....and YES you can.
Aussie Bushwalking can keep track of your bushwalks. Lake Boomanjin is the world's largest perched lake. They are used to people wearing thongs, not bushwalking boots. We grabbed some refreshments at the General Store at Kingfisher Bay and caught to 2pm Barge back to River Heads. I wouldn't recommend taking your pack with you, but at the same time, don't leave it unattended for long incase wildlife gets into it, but then, who really knows if that would happen. The campsites at almost all the locations are fenced, have gear lockers , a wooden platform and a cleared area for your tent. Aussie Bushwalking users can maintain a wishlist of walks for you but you need to be a member.
The campsite is remote and as a result, it's pretty poorly maintained. I'm not sure if there are showers here because I was too tired to bother! You must Login to tick walks. We caught the barge to Wangoolba Creek, then hiked to Central, did day hike to Lake McKenzie/Basin, then headed south past lakes to Boomanjin for overnight, then to Dilli (hot showers!!)
