Fei Fei lives in a lovely, very localized Chinese community that prizes the traditions of the Autumn Moon Festival, which is connected to the legend of Chang’e, and which contrasts against the real Chang’e’s corporate gaudiness. The story, though, starts off in somewhat less serious territory, occupied mostly with the summer-time shenanigans of Mouse and his two best friends, Lamont (Donielle T. Hansley Jr.) and SweartaGod (Kezii Curtis). Reynard doesn’t guard herself like the mother and son duo, confessing to her loneliness and vulnerability directly and emanating a flakey off-kilter energy that’s amusing and quite poignant. Yet the limitations of Green’s methods are evident in how his films, in toto, rarely stick in the heart as they do in the mind. The great Éric Rohmer was a master at this, and Atarrabi & Mikelats occasionally feels kin to such medieval fables such as 1978’s Perceval or 2007’s The Romance of Astrea and Celadon, in which morality has an ecstatic, at times erotic charge that the devil can’t hope to compete with. These textures aren’t offered up as obligatory window dressing for a monster movie as they’re The Wolf of Snow Hollow’s reason for being.
