night of the lepus review

Fei Fei lives in a lovely, very localized Chinese community that prizes the traditions of the Autumn Moon Festival, which is connected to the legend of Chang’e, and which contrasts against the real Chang’e’s corporate gaudiness. The story, though, starts off in somewhat less serious territory, occupied mostly with the summer-time shenanigans of Mouse and his two best friends, Lamont (Donielle T. Hansley Jr.) and SweartaGod (Kezii Curtis). Reynard doesn’t guard herself like the mother and son duo, confessing to her loneliness and vulnerability directly and emanating a flakey off-kilter energy that’s amusing and quite poignant. (Director Tim Hill’s previous credits include the 2001 Max Keeble’s Big Move, a similarly prank-infested film with a memorable food fight and a far more committed appeal to kid audiences.).
I am very glad that LEPUS has finally been officially released on DVD because for years, I have described it to fellow B-movie fans who have then accused me of making it up. Which is to say that Cummings isn’t in the business of glorifying rogue police officers, though he doesn’t offer John or the other men and women in his unit up as fashionable indictments of the entire profession either.
Though when Fei Fei eventually builds a rocket and flies to the moon, the kingdom she actually encounters, Lunaria, suggests a gaudy, hallucinatory cross between Oz, the Island of Lost Toys, Wonderland, Las Vegas, and, most pointedly, Disneyland. The girls soon ask to use the bathroom in the middle of the woods, and Brittany disappears, with Kayla claiming to have pushed her over a bridge into the frozen water below. But the further the film moves away from the kids knocking around the neighborhood and toward Mouse and his friends getting drawn into the criminal orbit (those bikes cost money after all), the more rote it begins to feel. On Frances and Malcolm’s transatlantic cruise to Europe, Malcolm befriends a clairvoyant, Madeleine (Danielle Macdonald), who has a habit of telling her rich and elderly clients when they’re going to die—a puckish, morbid joke that parodies wealthy entitlement while paralleling Frances’s escalating fears of poverty and death.

“We’re at the height of hipness here,” says the devil to Atarrabi at one point, though this candelabra-lit land of perdition seems more like a Middle Ages-themed nightclub that’s hit hard times. These tensions, particularly Jay’s arrested development, aren’t window dressing, but a direct influence on the calamities that follow. It is this technical laziness as much as the stupid story or the dumb direction that leaves the film in limbo and places it in neither one camp nor the other. Jim Cummings’s The Wolf of Snow Hollow is set in a small, picturesque mountain town that’s being plagued by a series of murders. The Lie then becomes a cover-up story, in which Rebecca and Jay reunite to help Kayla evade a murder prosecution. In spite of that rush, though, this is a quietly enraged, as well as enraging, assault on Donald Trump’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic—a sober attempt to write a first draft of this very recent history. If only the Peter (Oakes Fegley) of the film adaptation had such compunctions. Over the Moon’s main thread is moving, especially given the knowledge that Wells was dying while working on the film, but obvious and limiting. Night of the Lepus Review - Off The Shelf Reviews - YouTube Blank peppers her depiction of the theater scene with eccentric characters that serve to mock the theater both as a business and a creative process—as with the excessively self-serious Afro-centric playwright Forrest (Andre Ward), who looks down his nose at Radha, presumably because her creative process involves less patchouli incense. The precariousness of his economic situation forces him to resort to an experimental study developed by Dr. Lillian Brooks (Phylicia Rashad), who connects his brain to the Black Box, a digital hypnosis aid that allows him to virtually inhabit memories—memories that, as it turns out, may not be his own. Gibney, Harutyunyan, and Hillinger address this problem by determinedly sticking to the timeline, meticulously laying out one disastrous decision after another.

We’re led to assume that Frances and Malcolm will continue a series of semi-related adventures until we’re eventually required to leave their company. As Kayla blithely watches TV and cooks breakfast and plays with Dad in the aftermath of Brittany’s murder, Rebecca and Jay continue to believe that their daughter is good and this incident is a fluke that can be purged from their lives. Yet the limitations of Green’s methods are evident in how his films, in toto, rarely stick in the heart as they do in the mind. Impossible not to admire the total withholding of irony in Claxton's approach to this kamikaze project. A broader cast of minions, lackeys, corporate tools, and barnacles of the military-industrial complex emerge as more compelling suspects, such as Robert Kadlec, a long-time Department of Health and Human Services official with a deep history in bio-warfare, who mysteriously rejected a request for increased funding to fight the coronavirus. The great Éric Rohmer was a master at this, and Atarrabi & Mikelats occasionally feels kin to such medieval fables such as 1978’s Perceval or 2007’s The Romance of Astrea and Celadon, in which morality has an ecstatic, at times erotic charge that the devil can’t hope to compete with. These textures aren’t offered up as obligatory window dressing for a monster movie as they’re The Wolf of Snow Hollow’s reason for being.

The film takes place on a parched desert prairie that’s overrun by a plague of the fat lagomorpha, seriously pissing off a farmer who probably deserves all the grief coming to him, given that he was moronic enough to try to irrigate the desert in the first place. Thus, they must be killed. Fed up with the hubris and racism of liberal theater elites (“12 Angry Men with an all-female cast!”), as well as with their superficial attempts at socially conscious theater, Radha distances herself from that scene, re-styling herself as an MC under the name RadhaMUS Prime.
