This may not be the best contemporary book I have ever read, but it’s still an important book with a narrative that needed to be told.

Have you ever read a book and felt like you wrote it? this book is explosive. They aren't even really there as confidantes. The storyline doesn't make sense. But then it slowly snuck up on me and, by the end, proceeded to gouge out my soul.

He's paying such close attention to her, trying to read her face. Is this is book that is getting turned into a movie with Lili Reinhart? There's much to be said for what Tanne has pulled off in "Chemical Hearts," for his gentle and measured approach. Our Chemical Hearts reminds me of a lot of other YA contemporary books I've read; a mashup of bits from All The Bright Places, Papertowns, Eleanor & Park, The Start of Me and You, and When We Collided. There's a very messy movie here, kicking around within all the blue-toned minor-chord melancholy. The emotions wreak havoc. In a way, though, this is what teenage life can feel like, especially when powerful experiences hit.

This is a short book so if you do not want a long drawn out read I highly recommend you pick it up. Grace resists getting close to Henry, not because she doesn't want to get to know him, but because she does not want to be known. i am speechless. This is the second book in a row that I've read that I thoroughly enjoyed, but still had a handful of problems with it. "Chemical Hearts" is really about the roiling chaos and confusion of teenage life, of going through experiences—love, sex, heartbreak—for the first time and the huge impact these experiences have on the body and the nervous system (thank goodness Henry's sister is a neurosurgeon and can explain how it all works). It would have been so much more gut-wrenching and impacting if I had found the romance even remotely shippable before that… but I did not, unfortunately. Reinhart plays all of this beautifully. This book broke my heart a little bit. by G.P. She's handling it as best she can, but as the film goes on, you realize how much she's hanging by a thread.
The greatest love story ever told doesn't have to be about two people who spent their whole lives together. Since "Chemical Hearts" is told from Henry's point of view, we see Grace through his eyes, and she is a very intriguing figure, so standoffish towards him at first it's not clear why he keeps pursuing her, and why she keeps allowing it. This is part of "Chemical Hearts"' subversion. She is not there to help Henry learn/grow/change. The main character calls out the racism.... but then continues to call a character named Seeta Ganguly, Sugar Gandhi instead of her actual name.

The genre tropes are so thick in the film you can barely see through them, and yet, at the same time, "Chemical Hearts" subverts those very same tropes. I wanted to read this book because it was compared to Fault in Our Stars and Eleanor & Park, two of my most favorite books of all time.
It's such a great contemporary, with YA cliches, but used in an unique and meaningful way.
