They lovingly and effectively capture the allure of the Russian countryside and architecture in all its various forms. Portraits, gifts, letters, clothing, and more are all included.
The Last Czars aspires to a laughable objectivity suitable to a documentary, at the same time that it alters historical facts and turns its characters into caricatures.
That's no small achievement. I understand why the show focused solely on Alexandra and none of the other women, but they do deserve their time, as well! (I know that technically his son and brother were both very briefly czar, less than a day each, but those don’t really count… And that isn’t really gone into any detail.).
The Romanov women played a massive role in the history of the dynasty, not just Alexandra, and Gelardi’s exploration of these five different women is insightful and interesting. And my one last quibble? Unlike most royal families, they love one another passionately and hope to rule together and live up to the great name of their dynasty. It’s perfectly passable but lacks the wholistic finesse of The Crown or other full-on dramas. and to receive email from Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango. A stylish production abetted by commentary from historians of the Romanov period, The Last Czars, created by Nutopia, seamlessly blends remarkably detailed history with captivating dramatization.
An extraordinary sum of money appeared to have been spent on making the facial hair look as awful as possible, including a ratty stick-on beard for Rasputin, who looked like a retired rapist goalkeeper.
(My biggest pet peeve is when people don’t recognise that most shows aren’t available in every region, but this should be.) It is six episodes long, and follows the Romanov family from Nicholas II taking the throne in 1894 to their murder in 1918. They look with academic sympathy upon their suffering people while reticent to leave their (almost literal) gilded ivory tower.
Individually, the plates are excellent but together the clash of style and flavour never quite works.
The full-frontal, and at times “orgiastic”, nudity hamstrings their viewing numbers and potential for a wider audience.
The acted portions are supplemented by historians of the period explaining what was happening.
They’ve done what few shows of its kind can do: balance. Summary. The actors don’t look too terribly close to their Romanov counterparts, but I don’t know that it is an issue. The Last Czars is a Netflix original series, meaning that anyone who has Netflix on the globe should be able to watch it.

All this to say, I’d prefer a straight docuseries like The Windsors or a full-on drama like The Crown, but for what it is, it does its job incredibly well.

I was lucky enough to see the exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, and it is now at the Queen’s palace in Edinburgh until Nov 2019. And if you would like an overall look at the state of Europe, I would recommend George, Nicholas and Wilhelm: Three Royal Cousins and the Road to World War I by Miranda Carter. So, you’ve now watched all three episodes, and like many of us, still want more of the Romanovs. This seals their fates. Absolutely! , but for what it is, it does its job incredibly well. Switched and deleted this file series not even one star. It hits a sweet spot familiar to anyone who got drawn into the History Channel late at night as a tween.
