I haven't read the book so I can't really say if this is a Great adaptation or how it compares to it,but judging it on it's own,this is one overlooked film!It Beautifully brings the meddle ages to life mostly through the costumes and face make-up of the actors and features easily the best Sean Connery performance I've ever seen.Would Recommend! So I can enjoy how good adaptation in ficcion of a monastery and scriptorium of that period of the film.Of course had some misunderstandings, especially how humor worked in that period...Medieval times had a lot humor and doesn't had some kind of censorship of the production of manuscripts, this kind of concept even exist.

Watched this again to prepare for my next production. The acting, the casting, the pacing, it's all way off, and yet it never dips below enjoyable. I was intrigued by the story (it's a classic murder mystery), but the whole movie is set in on one location, and it is pretty uneventful, so it was a really tedious experience. IMDb I'm stumped by this bizarre detective story set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327.

Not just a great mystery but also one of the best-made mysteries I've ever seen in terms of set design and period detail, The Name of the Rose is a terrific historical thriller that's easy to be immersed into thanks to the astonishing filmmaking craft on display, as well as Sean Connery's fantastic performance that's easily one of the legendary actor's very best.
